Food Security In The Home Garden


The effect of increasing human population on food availability often lead to degradation of natural resources, such as the emergence of a negative impact on the quality of human life. But over time and increased knowledge, people can find alternatives or methods to overcome the obstacles to exist through sustainable land use systems on the basis of the knowledge society.

Most of the population in Indonesia live in rural areas and around forest areas, generally have a life experience in managing natural resources as well as in their utilization. In Java land use systems, such as homegarden have been done since hundreds of years ago and is a legacy of land-use technologies developed by generations. As a tradition handed down, the yard also expanded beyond the island of Java, combined with traditional agricultural activities carried out by local communities, such as shifting cultivation or courtyard gardens such as those developed by the transmigrants. Home garden as the land use is defined as a system of additional food production on a small scale for and by members of the family household and as a canopy-covered ecosystems. While the plot can only have limited home garden as an area where there is a house occupied as a part of it.The home garden have an obvious limitation, as a whole consists of home, kitchen, pecuren / yard, peceren, pawuhan, cage, plegongan and fences. One of the most important benefits of the home garden function is to provide food and nutritional needs of families by planting various kinds of plants in an effort to increase the diversity of family food.


The presence of food plants in the yard is supporting the food needs of the family. Given the diversity of plants in the yard of the farmer can take turns taking the results as firewood, leaves, fruits and tubers are used for everyday needs. In this case the pattern of the yard to play an important role and function of plant characteristics in accordance with what is expected. Home garden pattern was influence by economic factors and physical factors.
